Monotype through Drawing with Sarah Smelser
Tues-Fri, June 15-18 | 9am-4pm
Tuition: $630
Concept
Explore both direct and indirect monotype techniques in this four-day workshop. Learn how to combine these user-friendly approaches to monotype to reach your goals - printing both by hand and on the press - whether working spontaneously, planning meticulously, developing a body of related works, adding to your skillset, or exploring varied ideas and results.
Experience
The first day begins with trace monotype. Done most effectively on dry Asian paper, trace monotype uses the vocabulary of drawing rather than the painterly approach traditionally associated with monotype. Trace monotype is portable and invites possibilities for plein air printmaking. It can stand on its own or initiate collages, mixed media works, and printstallation. Secondary demonstrations include stencil printing, counter-proofing, ghost printing ink modification, and blend rolls. Each day is comprised of demonstrations, group and one-on-one troubleshooting, and individual work time. Leave this workshop with a stack of prints, new set of skills, and ideas for the future.
Instructor
As an educator of nearly 30 years, Sarah Smelser has built her teaching practice around generosity, patience, and encouragement. Her studio work revolves around travel and, specifically, walking. She uses a camera and observation to collect images of organic forms, hard-edged shapes, plotted boundaries, and patterns fundamental to the natural and human-made world. Sarah exhibits her work nationally and internationally, and is Professor of Printmaking at Illinois State University. When not on the move or in the studio, she enjoys the company of family, reading, watching movies, and providing unrequited love to her two cats.
Skill Level
Accessible and unique, this workshop is geared toward a wide range of learners, from beginning students to seasoned printmakers.
