Concept

In this two-day workshop, dive into the rich world of color! Build a foundation in color mixing basics before shifting focus to how to use color as a design tool to strengthen your individual compositions and overall painting practice.

Experience

Demonstrations introduce what makes a color combination successful, as well as how colors affect one another. Exercises provide an opportunity to assemble color schemes and practice mixing. Utilize these lessons and strategies to create two paintings from either photo references or imagination. Individualized instruction is provided throughout the workshop.Investigate the three fundamental properties of color - hue, value, and saturation - through carefully designed exercises that train your eye to distinguish and manipulate each independently. As the workshop progresses, discover one of Albers’ most powerful ideas: that color is always relative. Through a series of simple collage studies, witness how neighboring colors can dramatically alter the appearance of another color, making it seem lighter or darker, warmer or cooler, brighter or duller - without changing the color itself. Leave with a collection of color studies, a fresh perspective on how color truly works, and the confidence to make bold, informed color decisions in your artistic practice.

Instructor

Born and raised in Milwaukee, Beki Borman knew she wanted to be an artist from a young age and earned her BFA in Painting from Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Today, Beki creates abstract landscapes that explore color, shape, and contrast using acrylic paint and a knife as her primary tool. As an educator, she believes art should be accessible and enjoyable for all. She reminds her students it’s never too late to start and that we’re all on our own journey. When not teaching or painting, Beki likes to read, write, exercise, and play with her kids and dog.
