Simplify to Paint: A Four-Day Watercolor Landscape Workshop with Yong Hong Zhong
Wed-Sat, August 4-7 | 9am-4pm
Tuition: $610
Open to those with a foundation in watercolor painting.
Concept
Landscape painting can often feel overwhelming. There are countless details, colors, textures, and visual information competing for our attention. The key to a successful painting, however, is not to capture everything we see, but to understand what is essential and learn how to simplify it. In this four-day workshop, explore a practical and intuitive approach to landscape painting, focusing on the fundamental elements of value, shape, color, edges, light, and shadow.
Experience
Through a series of demonstrations, exercises, and paintings from provided photographs, learn how to break down complex landscapes into simple, understandable shapes and value patterns. The first three days focus on studio painting using carefully selected references. Weather and conditions permitting, the final day may include a plein air painting session, allowing students to apply what they have learned directly from nature. The ultimate goal is to develop a simpler, more confident approach to painting - one that allows students to make intentional decisions rather than becoming overwhelmed by details.
Instructor
Yong Hong Zhong was born in Canton, China and immigrated to the United States when he was twelve years old. Yong developed a keen interest in drawing at an early age. His determination to pursue his dream of being an artist prompted him to attend La Guardia High School, a prestigious school for music and arts in New York City, and Pratt Institute to further develop his artistic skills where he majored in Illustration and has a minor in Art History. Yong started working for the Disney Animation Studios upon graduation. During his fourteen years at Disney, Yong worked on over a dozen theatrical feature films. After completion of Disney's "The Princess and the Frog", Yong was ready to take a different direction and focus on his passion for traditional painting. The knowledge and experiences he acquired from the animation industry continue to be an invaluable influence in his work. Yong has been a full-time fine art painter since 2009. He participates in plein air painting competitions and teaches workshops around the country.
