Bronze Casting with John Hallett
Tue-Sat, August 17-21 | 9am-4pm
Tuition: $750
Concept
Using contemporary methods and materials, learn the ancient art of bronze casting in this engaging and labor-intensive workshop. Create a ceramic shell cast of an original wax sculpture or transform an existing piece into a work in bronze.
Experience
John guides you step-by-step through the lost wax process of bronze casting; from concept to preliminary finishing techniques. Be prepared for a busy week loaded with information and hard work in a much more condensed timeline than the process would usually unfold within. Develop new skills, engage in a unique hands-on experience, and reserve your perfectionism for future casting opportunities when you are more familiar with the process and time is less limited. Additional material costs may vary based on the size and number of sculptures you produce, as well as the current market prices of bronze and other consumables.
Instructor
Dr. John Hallett is a sculptor, veterinarian, log rolling coach, and Nordic ski racer with a Master of Fine Arts from Minneapolis College of Art and Design. After over 30 years as a veterinarian and practice owner, he shifted to being a full time sculptor. He uses his background in science and veterinary medicine to inform his art practice. He is drawn to create sculptures that come from his unique perspective and enjoys inspiring others to investigate trees, forests, and animals. He creates the trophies for the Stihl Timbersports U.S. Nationals, the Lumberjack World Championships, and the American Birkebeiner Ski Race. Hallett splits his time between Oconomowoc and Seeley, Wisconsin. He shares his lifelong passion for art with others as he encourages them to let their creativity flow and invite the technical process into the final product. He taught bronze and pewter casting workshops in Tucson, Arizona and was a teaching assistant at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. In a perfectionistic world, art is one place where everyone can embrace imperfection while creating something meaningful and beautiful.
