Concept

What if the color you see isn’t the color that’s really there? Inspired by the groundbreaking color theories of Joseph Albers, this immersive workshop explores the fascinating ways color influence one another and how understanding those relationships can transform your artwork. Using Color-Aid paper instead of paint, bypass the time-consuming process of color mixing and focus entirely on seeing, comparing, and understanding color through a series of hands-on collage exercises.

Experience

Investigate the three fundamental properties of color - hue, value, and saturation - through carefully designed exercises that train your eye to distinguish and manipulate each independently. As the workshop progresses, discover one of Albers’ most powerful ideas: that color is always relative. Through a series of simple collage studies, witness how neighboring colors can dramatically alter the appearance of another color, making it seem lighter or darker, warmer or cooler, brighter or duller - without changing the color itself. Leave with a collection of color studies, a fresh perspective on how color truly works, and the confidence to make bold, informed color decisions in your artistic practice.

Instructor

In his work, Adam Fulwiler investigates communication, improvisation, play, and painting's capacity for transformation. As an educator, he prioritizes approachability, clarity, and cultivation of personal creativity. When not in the studio, you can find Adam hiking, playing board games, finding the next best local craft brewery, and spending time with his family. He earned his MFA from the University of Arkansa and is the Executive Director of The Hardy Gallery in Ephraim, WI. He lives in Sturgeon Bay, where he maintains an active studio practice.
