Small Landscapes, Big Atmosphere: An Introduction to Oil + Cold Wax with Karen Sako

Concept

Small paintings are the perfect place to take big chances. In this energetic one-day workshop, explore the medium of oil paint combined with cold wax through a series of small landscape studies focused on color, texture, atmosphere, simplification, and expressive mark-making.

Experience

With Karen as your guide, layer, scrape, soften, reveal, and edit while experimenting with different approaches to composition and abstraction. Emphasis is placed on working freely, making strong visual decisions, and allowing the paintings to evolve rather than simply copying a reference. Create four exploratory studies on oil paper, then use what you discover to develop a more finished 6x8" painting on a cradled wood panel. Come ready to experiment, loosen up, and see where the landscape takes you.

Instructor

Fusing traditional art principles with exploratory techniques and materials, Karen Sako's abstract work examines the elusive quality of light and the complexity of nature. She brings enthusiasm and optimism to the classroom, where she continually invests her time and shares her trade secrets and findings with her students. Her goal is to ignite the next generation of pioneering creative visionaries and thinkers. Karen holds a BFA in Visual Communications from the Illinois Institute of Art and is an accomplished abstract artist, graphic designer, and instructor. Additionally, she is the Artist-in-Residence at the Ingwersen Studio and Gallery in Sister Bay, WI.
