Concept

The most playful and painterly of the printmaking processes, a monotype can only ever be printed once in its original state. This class emphasizes immediacy and intuition. Discover the wide world of monotype (sometimes called monoprinting), along with the properties of ink, paper, and pressure, and how they interact to create unique, one-of-a-kind prints.

Experience

Through demonstrations and hands-on practice, explore a variety of techniques, including using ink to paint imagery onto a smooth plate (plexiglass or Dura-Lar) and using hand-cut stencils to mask or reveal marks and fields of color. Experiment with gesture and texture through different mark-making tools, as well as ghost printing. Don provides guidance throughout the process, from inking to paper prep to press use. Expect to leave with a stack of prints and the tools to continue exploring this medium.

Instructor

Don Krumpos started making art by cobbling impossible machines and formidable forts on his father’s century farm. Today his work combines his world of narratives with material culture of old and new, sprinkled with contemporary absurdities. Don’s primary goal is to diminish the barrier to art by making techniques accessible and helping students creatively problem solve technical and conceptual concerns. When not in the studio, Don is off on adventures with his wife and son. Don co-owns Yonder, a gallery and studio space in Algoma, WI.

All levels welcome. Monotype is well suited for those new to printmaking and those who typically work with paint, mixed media, or drawing.
