This fall, students return to the living tree installation on PenArt’s campus created by last year’s Arts Lab participants, expanding the design and adding new plantings to this evolving outdoor artwork. From there, students explore connections between art, the changing landscape, and the natural systems around them through hands-on investigations and creative projects.

Working much like artists in a studio, students are introduced to ideas, materials, and processes while also having plenty of room to experiment, follow their own questions, and take their work in unexpected directions.

Tuition: $150

All classes held at PenArt. Students are transported from Gibraltar to PenArt via the Y bus and will be ready for pickup at PenArt at 5pm.

Winter brings a new set of possibilities to the Arts Lab as students investigate connections between art, earth, climate and the changing world around them. Through a mix of guided projects and open-ended exploration, students experiment with materials and processes while developing their own ideas and ways of working.

The Arts Lab is also responsive to the season itself. When conditions allow, the landscape surrounding PenArt may become part of the artmaking experience, giving students opportunities to experiment and create outdoors with unexpected natural mediums such as snow! Students work much like artists do: responding to ideas, materials, one another, and the unexpected.

Tuition: $200

Spring brings new life and new possibilities to the Arts Lab. As the landscape begins to change, students look closely at the natural world for inspiration, exploring ideas of growth, transformation, and our relationship to the places we live. Through a mix of guided projects and open-ended exploration, students experiment with a variety of materials and processes while developing their own ideas and ways of working.

As always, the Arts Lab leaves room for curiosity and discovery. Students work much like artists do: observing, asking questions, experimenting, collaborating, and allowing materials and ideas to take their work in unexpected directions. Weather permitting, students will head outdoors to create ephemeral earthworks using natural materials found in the surrounding landscape.

This fall brings an exciting new Arts Lab experience designed especially for younger artists! Students explore connections between art and the natural world through hands-on investigations, creative play, and plenty of experimentation with art materials and processes.

The Arts Lab combines thoughtfully guided projects with room for children to follow their own curiosity and ideas. Students draw, paint, sculpt, and discover what materials can do, with an emphasis on exploration and the creative process rather than everyone arriving at the same result. Whenever possible, we’ll also take advantage of PenArt’s outdoor surroundings as a place to observe, gather inspiration, and learn through direct experience.

Tuition: $150 for One Student, $275 for Two Students (must be siblings), $400 for Three Students (must be siblings).

Open to Homeschool students ages 9+. Maximum of 12 students per session.

Designed for older students ready for longer and more sustained studio experiences, this three-hour Arts Lab gives students time to develop both their ideas and their skills. Students explore connections between art, earth, and climate through a combination of guided investigations, individual and collaborative projects, and open-ended experimentation.

Along the way, students build a growing range of techniques in drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed media, including skills used in observational and representational artmaking. As in an artist’s studio, developing technical skills and experimenting go hand in hand: students gain new tools and ways of working, then have room to apply them to their own ideas, questions, and creative choices.

Winter also offers opportunities to respond directly to the season. When conditions cooperate, students may take their work outdoors, using PenArt’s surrounding landscape and even materials such as snow as part of the artmaking process.

Tuition: $200 for One Student, $375 for Two Students (must be siblings), $550 for Three Students (must be siblings).

The Arts Lab combines thoughtfully guided projects with room for curiosity, imagination, and individual choices. Winter may also provide some our of most unexpected art materials. When conditions cooperate, we’ll head outside to explore the winter landscape, trading clay for snow as we create and experiment outdoors.

Tuition: $150 for One Student, $275 for Two Students (must be siblings), $400 for Three Students (must be siblings)

Through drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed-media work, students explore connections between art and the natural world while building techniques in both observational and representational artmaking.

The three-hour studio format allows time for sustained projects as well as experimentation, collaboration, and independent creative choices. Students are encouraged to take ideas further, try different approaches, and use their growing technical skills in increasingly individual ways.

Weather permitting, we’ll also move beyond the studio to create ephemeral earthworks in the landscape, considering how artists can work with natural materials, place, and change itself as part of the creative process.

Tuition: $200 for One Student, $375 for Two Students (must be siblings), $550 for Three Students (must be siblings).
