Have you ever used a stamp? Then you already know the secret of relief printing! In this six-week class, make your own giant stamp by carving a picture into a block of soft linoleum. Here's the twist: whatever you carve away stays white, and whatever you leave behind catches the ink and prints. That means you have to think backward, and your picture comes out flipped like a mirror image! This series starts with drawing a design, then learning to use carving tools safely to cut into the block. Next, roll ink with a brayer, press paper on top, and peel it back to reveal your print. The best part is that one block can make many prints, so you can try different colors and papers and share your art with friends and family. Artists have been making prints like these for hundreds of years, and now it's your turn. Get ready to carve, ink, and print!

Kyle Jablonski is a visual artist working across drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and social practice. He holds an MFA in Studio Art from the University of Hawai'i and a BS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he double-majored in Biology and Zoology with a minor in African Studies. Kyle's path has also taken him through Miami and Portland, Oregon, along with time in South Africa's Limpopo Province, where he trained as a field guide. That time in the bushveld left a lasting mark on his work, which remains deeply informed by conservation and the relationship between land, wildlife, and human presence - and by how our understanding of an environment shapes the way we use and ultimately conserve it. Kyle has taught studio art at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Milwaukee Area Technical College, and Mount Mary University. When he’s not in the studio, Kyle runs Inland Pizza with his family.

Before Instagram, before photography, before printing presses could churn out color images by machine - artists like Hokusai were carving The Great Wave into blocks of wood, by hand, one layer at a time. This class puts that same craft into your teen's hands. Over six sessions, students learn to carve their own designs into wood, ink them, and pull multiple prints from a single block - turning one image into an edition they can actually hold. It's part sculpture, part drawing, part chemistry of ink and pressure, and it rewards patience. Students leave with a finished set of prints and real technical skill in a centuries-old medium that's still very much alive today.
